Meet the Team: Richard Mair, Technical Support
Richard, what attracted you to your current position?
“No experience required” - I knew I was a shoe in. No seriously, I had worked with Novell’s PlateSpin in my previous job and found the concept of machine failover and migration interesting. When I was looking for a new job I found out that StorageCraft made failover and DR software, which made me successfully chase the job.
What is the most memorable thing a customer said to you?
This is an interesting one; when I met this customer, I had been emailing with about an implementation, in person for the first time, he was startled: “You are Richard Mair?!?! I was expecting you to be at least 30-something.” I am 22 years old.
What do you do when you're away from your desk?
Since IT is a passion of mine, I leave my work desk and pretty much go straight to my home desk. Most weeknights I’d go mountain biking with a few tracks near my house on the Northern Beaches. My weekends are a mixture of going out, late breakfast and spending time at the beach. I am also a bit of a thrill seeker - I love skydiving, I am a member of Club Lotus Australia and have a CAMS license.
What was your dream job when you were 5?
I wanted to be an accountant. I was told accountants made a lot of money when I was young, so I just said I wanted to do that. I am good with numbers and family friends always said I was going to be doing something logical. When I told them I was working in IT a few people were surprised I didn’t end up in some form of Engineering. Well, I guess IT is still ‘logical’.

What's your favourite place in the world?
I went to South America last year (Ecuador + Galapagos islands, Peru and Bolivia). Hopefully I am going back next year; I can potentially see myself getting stuck there.
If you weren’t doing this job, what would you be?
Studying a Degree of Computer Science / Mathematics, probably working in a bar while studying.
